The latest IPCC reports makes it painfully clear: the World needs to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 for a chance to stay close to 1,5°C global warming, then halve again until 2040 to reach net-zero by 2050. We also need to restore and preserve nature to rebuild large-scale carbon sinks. If we fail, there will be severe to catastrophic consequences depending on how close we get and which tipping points we trigger. Every tenth of a degree will matter.
To align with this challenging roadmap and send a strong message to our industry, SOG decided in 2022 that a climate commitment in line with the Paris agreement will be a requirement for all SOG members, through one of the UNFCCC Race to Zero partner initiatives or through a verified 1,5°C commitment in STICA.
ABOUT RACE TO ZERO
Race to Zero is a UNFCCC’s global campaign to rally leadership for the 1,5°C future. It creates momentum by bringing together leading initiatives and networks. You join the initiative through one of the partners. The most relevant Race to Zero partners for SOG members are:
- Business Ambition for 1,5°C
For all types of business, gathering the international Science Based Targets initiative, UN Global Compact and We Mean Business - Exponential Roadmap Initiative
For all types of business. International initiative with a base in Sweden, gathering the most ambitious and action-oriented climate leaders. - B-Corp Climate Collective – Net Zero 2030
For all types of businesses with high ambitions in sustainability and responsibility. - Fashion Charter for Climate Action
UNFCCC-led initiative for businesses in the international fashion and textile value chains. - SME Climate Hub
For small and medium sized businesses of all types.
STICA: A verified 1,5°C commitment with STICA will also count until 2024, to avoid double work for textile SOG members that are already members of STICA or are considering joining. SOG suggests that STICA also joins the Race to Zero campaign, as one global campaign gives more clarity.
INITIAL GUIDANCE –FINDING A PLEDGE INITIATIVE
For Small and Medium (SME) sized companies, the SME Climate Hub is a great alternative where requirements are tailored for SME capacity and tools are available for scope 1 and 2, and even a tool for a transaction-based scope 3 calculation.
For bigger companies, the SBTi or the Fashion Charter For Climate Action are good places to commit. For practical work and exchanging information STICA and the EOG climate initiatives are great resources.
For companies with front line ambitions to contribute to global net zero, Exponential Roadmap Initiative (ERI) is a good alternative. It requires that companies are nominated and pass the ERI/RTZ climate performance review.
