Bergans Eidfjord Jacket

Eidfjord
All-round outdoor jacket with sustainable polyester material, Ecodear from Toray

This is not just a versatile and light outdoor jacket with outstanding weather protection – its material is almost revolutionary: the outer fabric of the 3-layer Eidfjord Jacket is made from 30% plant-based polyester, without sacrificing performance or recyclability. The material ecodear™ by the textile manufacturer TORAY uses waste molasses, a by-product of the sugar production. It sets a milestone in the development of resource-saving plastics and in the utilization of renewable resources instead of fossil oil. It helps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, conserve fossil oil and can be recycled. The Eidfjord Jacket is a step in the direction towards fully plant-based polyester, which TORAY is planning to make available for mass production in a few years.

Even prior to presenting the material to the trade, to support this material revolution Bergans and TORAY started an extensive crowdsourcing campaign on the ISPO OPEN INNOVATION platform; as part of this campaign, 30 testers from 10 different countries have been on the road with the first prototypes of the jacket since spring this year to thoroughly test the new material and to exchange ideas in the Open Innovation Forum. These findings help to further improve the Eidfjord Jacket before it goes into serial production. Bergans’ athletes and retail partners are also taking part in the test.
